As we move into the early months of 2026, we’re facing one of the most demanding winter seasons in recent memory, made even more challenging by a widespread rock salt shortage. Demand has never been higher, while supply remains uncertain. Contractors are being forced to hold pricing while absorbing rising material costs, spending countless hours trying to secure product. Many suppliers now require full upfront payment for material that may go unused if winter ends abruptly. Do you commit and take the risk, or gamble and wait it out?

Anyone who says landscaping isn’t stressful has never managed winter operations. Ensuring properties are safe and free of snow and ice is difficult enough without the added pressure of material shortages.
The key is planning. Snow operation conversations shouldn’t start in October. They need to begin early and continue throughout the year. Respect for the snow season has to come long before the first snowfall.

Educating clients is essential. The more they understand the challenges behind the scenes, the easier it becomes to explain rising costs. Never assume that context is already there.
