A Backyard Built for Family Time and Entertaining
Project: Multi-Level Patio is a backyard transformation we had the pleasure of bringing to life. What was once an outdated space made up of a small deck and grass yard has been completely reworked into a backyard designed for a young family to enjoy together. The goal was to create a space that felt welcoming, functional, and ready for both everyday use and entertaining.
Starting With the Existing Space
From the start, we saw the potential in the property’s natural grade. Rather than flattening the yard into a single level, we leaned into the elevation changes and designed a series of patios that work together naturally. This approach added depth to the layout and helped define each area of the backyard. At the center of it all is a new pool, which naturally became the focal point of the space.
Because the property drops off significantly on one side, retaining walls were needed to create a stable and usable pool deck. This level became the main gathering area, offering space to relax, move around the pool, and connect the surrounding patios.
Adding a Raised Patio and Covered Space
As the design took shape, it became clear that the backyard could benefit from another layer. A raised patio off the back door was introduced to improve the connection between the house and the yard while adding a second gathering space. The homeowners immediately connected with the idea, and it quickly became one of the defining features of Project: Multi-Level Patio.
To make this area more functional throughout the year, a custom covered structure will be added. Creating a comfortable outdoor space that can be used well beyond pool season and adds flexibility to how the backyard is enjoyed.
Material Choices That Tie the Space Together
With the layout finalized, attention turned to materials. The homeowners gravitated toward Techo Bloc products, so the Raffinato line was used for the pool coping, stairs, and retaining walls. The clean profile and strong lines of the Raffinato blocks gave the space a modern feel with a solid architectural presence.
Blu pavers were selected for the patio surfaces and finished with a double border and accent colour, just as the homeowners envisioned. These details helped tie the different levels together while keeping the design consistent throughout the space.
Adjusting the Plan as the Space Took Shape
As construction progressed, the homeowners gained a clearer sense of the scale of the backyard. A garden was originally planned around the raised patio to soften the retaining wall, but once the patios and pool were in place, it became clear that expanding the patio would better suit how the space would be used.
After a few conversations, the plan was adjusted. The garden was removed, patio space was expanded, and the lighting was updated to in-ground paver lights. The change allowed Project: Multi-Level Patio to move forward without delay while better aligning with the homeowners’ needs.
Wrapping Up This Phase
The pool is now complete and winterized, and we are finishing the remaining hardscape work as winter sets in. Only a few final stone details remain before this phase is complete.
We’ll return in the spring to complete the planting and garden work, bringing the backyard fully to life and adding the final layer to what is already a welcoming and well-used outdoor space.
